Mechanism of action
Isotonic saline is a crystalloid solution with osmolarity matching blood plasma (~308 mOsm/L), allowing safe administration without causing cell lysis or crenation. It replaces lost fluids and maintains electrolyte homeostasis, particularly sodium and chloride ions. This solution is used for hydration, medication dilution, and wound irrigation across multiple clinical settings.
Approved indications
- Fluid and electrolyte replacement in dehydration
- Vehicle for intravenous medication administration
- Wound irrigation and topical cleansing
- Maintenance of vascular access patency
Common side effects
- Hyperchloremic acidosis (with prolonged high-volume use)
- Fluid overload / pulmonary edema (in susceptible patients)
- Hypernatremia (rare, with excessive administration)
