Mechanism of action
The dextran coating protects iron from premature precipitation and allows it to be transported to bone marrow macrophages and hepatocytes. Once internalized, the iron is released and utilized for erythropoiesis and other physiological iron-dependent processes. This parenteral formulation bypasses gastrointestinal absorption limitations and is used to rapidly replenish iron stores in iron-deficiency anemia.
