Mechanism of action
Misoprostol binds to prostaglandin receptors on uterine smooth muscle, increasing intracellular calcium and triggering myometrial contractions. When administered intravaginally or intracervically, it also softens and dilates the cervix by promoting cervical remodeling through prostaglandin-mediated mechanisms, making it effective for labor induction and pregnancy termination.
