Mechanism of action
Hypotonic hydration involves administration of fluids with lower osmolality than plasma, such as dextrose 5% in water or hypotonic saline solutions. This causes water to move into cells by osmosis, reducing extracellular fluid osmolality and serum sodium levels. It is used therapeutically to treat hypernatremia and certain conditions of fluid and electrolyte imbalance.
Approved indications
- Hypernatremia
- Dehydration with hypernatremia
- Fluid and electrolyte imbalance
Common side effects
- Hyponatremia (if overcorrected)
