Mechanism of action

Bupivacaine blocks sodium channels in nerve fibers, preventing action potential propagation and producing local anesthesia. The hyperbaric formulation (denser than cerebrospinal fluid) allows controlled distribution in the spinal canal. Morphine, an opioid agonist at mu receptors in the spinal cord, provides additional analgesia and extends the duration of pain relief. Together, they produce synergistic anesthetic and analgesic effects for surgical procedures.
