Mechanism of action

Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 130/0.42 consists of starch molecules with a molecular weight of 130 kDa and degree of substitution of 0.42, which remain in the intravascular space longer than crystalloids. When combined with electrolyte solution, it provides both colloid osmotic support and electrolyte balance to treat acute hypovolemia and maintain hemodynamic stability during surgery or critical illness.
