Mechanism of action

Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) is metabolized to release nitric oxide, which activates guanylate cyclase in vascular smooth muscle cells, increasing cGMP levels and causing vasodilation. This reduces preload and afterload on the heart, improving coronary blood flow and reducing myocardial oxygen demand. It is commonly used for acute angina relief and chronic angina prevention.
