Mechanism of action

Glycerin is a hygroscopic agent that creates an osmotic gradient when applied topically to the ear canal. This gradient pulls fluid from the middle ear space across the tympanic membrane, thereby reducing middle ear pressure and associated symptoms such as pain, fullness, and conductive hearing loss. The mechanism is particularly useful in acute otitis media with effusion or serous otitis media.
