Mechanism of action

In cystic fibrosis and other conditions with thick, purulent airway secretions, neutrophil death releases DNA that increases sputum viscosity and impairs mucociliary clearance. Dornase alfa enzymatically degrades this extracellular DNA, reducing sputum viscoelasticity and facilitating expectoration. This improves airway function and reduces infection risk.
