Mechanism of action
Diltiazem inhibits the influx of calcium ions into vascular and cardiac smooth muscle cells, leading to vasodilation and reduced vasoconstriction. When formulated as a 2% cream for topical application, it is used to relieve pain and promote healing in localized conditions by improving microvascular blood flow and reducing smooth muscle spasm in the affected area.
