dexmedetomidine 2
dexmedetomidine 2 is a Alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist Small molecule drug developed by National Cancer Institute, Egypt. It is currently FDA-approved for Sedation of intubated and mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care settings, Sedation and analgesia for procedural sedation. Also known as: Late Dexmedetomidine, Dex,Dexmedetomidine.
Dexmedetomidine is a selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that produces sedation, analgesia, and anxiolysis by activating presynaptic and postsynaptic alpha-2 receptors in the central nervous system.
Dexmedetomidine is a small molecule that acts as an adrenergic receptor alpha-2 agonist. It has been studied in various clinical trials for conditions such as sleep disorders, anesthesia, and kidney transplantation, among others.

Mechanism of action
Dexmedetomidine binds with high selectivity to alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, particularly in the locus coeruleus and other brainstem regions, leading to decreased norepinephrine release and reduced neuronal firing. This results in a unique sedative state characterized by maintained airway reflexes and the ability to be aroused, along with analgesic and anxiolytic effects. The drug is the active d-enantiomer of medetomidine and has approximately 1600-fold selectivity for alpha-2 over alpha-1 receptors.
