Mechanism of action
The progestin desogestrel inhibits the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge necessary for ovulation, while ethinyl estradiol suppresses follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to prevent follicle development. Together, these hormones also alter the endometrium and cervical mucus to create a hostile environment for sperm penetration and implantation.
