Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen is a Physical ablation therapy Small molecule drug developed by Barretos Cancer Hospital. It is currently in Phase 3 development for Skin cancer and precancerous lesions (actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma), Warts and benign skin growths. Also known as: Cry-ac ®.
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen destroys tissue by rapid freezing, causing ice crystal formation and cellular death.
Liquid nitrogen is used as an intervention in cryotherapy for conditions such as Airway Obstruction, Molluscum Contagiosum, Esophageal Cancer, Actinic Keratosis, and Plantar Wart, as seen in clinical trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen is a small molecule modality, as classified by ChEMBL, which lists liquid nitrogen as a synonym for the compound E-941.
-
Baseline phase 3 → approval rate
+58.3pp
Industry-wide phase 3 drugs reach approval ~58.3% of the time (BIO/Informa 2023 industry benchmark across all therapeutic areas). -
Oncology Phase 3 boost
+3.0pp
Oncology Phase 3 trials have higher approval rates (~61%) than the cross-industry average due to clearer endpoints and FDA oncology pathway.

Mechanism of action
Liquid nitrogen at extremely low temperatures (−196°C) is applied directly to target tissue, causing intracellular and extracellular ice formation that damages cell membranes and organelles. This leads to immediate cell death (necrosis) and subsequent immune-mediated destruction of treated lesions. The procedure is used primarily for localized skin lesions and superficial tumors.
