Mechanism of action

By competitively binding to estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary, clomifene prevents the normal inhibitory effects of endogenous estrogen on GnRH and gonadotropin release. This results in increased FSH and LH secretion, which stimulates follicular development and ovulation in women with anovulation or oligoovulation. In men, it increases testosterone production by stimulating testicular function.
