Mechanism of action
Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, while gentamicin is an aminoglycoside that also inhibits protein synthesis and causes bactericidal effects. When used together as an irrigation solution, they provide broad-spectrum coverage against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria commonly found in surgical and wound infections.
Approved indications
- Surgical site infection prophylaxis and treatment via irrigation
- Wound irrigation for mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacterial infections
Common side effects
- Local irritation at irrigation site
- Allergic reaction (clindamycin or gentamicin hypersensitivity)
- Nephrotoxicity (gentamicin-related, with systemic absorption)
- Ototoxicity (gentamicin-related, with systemic absorption)
