Mechanism of action
Chlorhexidine is a cationic biguanide that binds to negatively charged bacterial cell membranes, causing leakage of intracellular contents and cell death. At higher concentrations, it also precipitates bacterial proteins and nucleic acids. The 0.2% formulation is commonly used as an oral rinse for plaque and gingivitis control.
