Mechanism of action
As a selective COX-2 inhibitor, celecoxib preferentially blocks COX-2 enzyme activity while sparing COX-1, which is responsible for protective gastrointestinal and renal functions. This selectivity reduces prostaglandin-mediated inflammatory responses and pain signaling while theoretically minimizing gastrointestinal toxicity compared to non-selective NSAIDs. The drug is used to treat inflammatory conditions and pain by suppressing the inflammatory cascade at the prostaglandin synthesis level.
