Mechanism of action

Calcium hydroxide dissociates into calcium and hydroxyl ions, creating a highly alkaline pH (12.5) that has antimicrobial properties against endodontic pathogens and promotes hard tissue formation. It also neutralizes bacterial endotoxins and dissolves necrotic tissue remnants within the root canal space. The medication is placed between appointments to reduce intracanal bacterial load before final obturation.
