Mechanism of action
As a quaternary ammonium compound, benzalkonium chloride acts as a surfactant that damages the lipid bilayer of sperm cell membranes, leading to loss of motility and cell death. This prevents sperm from reaching and fertilizing the ovum. The cream formulation allows for topical vaginal application to create a local contraceptive barrier.
