Mechanism of action
The combinations pair nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (AZT, 3TC, D4T) or integrase inhibitors (Truvada contains tenofovir/emtricitabine) with the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NVP/nevirapine) to block multiple steps of HIV replication. By targeting reverse transcriptase through different mechanisms, these regimens reduce the likelihood of resistance development and achieve sustained viral suppression.
