USPTO Abstract

A syringe pump has a drive mechanism 7 for moving the plunger 35 of a syringe 3 along a barrel 30. Ears 33 at the rear of the barrel 30 engage against a wall 32 on the pump and an L shape clamp arm 44 is urged against the ears by a spring 49. The clamp arm 44 is mounted about an axis at right-angles to the syringe 3 and is articulated at a point 45 along its length. A lever 52 having a flag 53 at one end is pivoted about a horizontal axis by movement of the arm and moves relative to an optical sensor 54 so that the output of the sensor indicates whether the syringe 3 is correctly loaded in the pump. The clamp arm 44 is rotated away from the barrel 30 by the drive mechanism during loading of the syringe 3. <IMAGE>
