USPTO Abstract

A solid wafer formulation, which readily adheres to the tongue or buccal mucosa of animals, comprises a physiologically active substance, a solid non-toxic adhesive and a non-toxic humectant and plasticizer. Preferably the wafers have a surface area greater than 300 square millilitres and a thickness from 0,2 to 1,0 mm. A wafer for piglets is prepared by drying a sheet of paste containing iron powder and copper powder suspended in an aqueous solution of sorbitol and sodium carboxymethylcellulose. In a second example, the active substance is calcium dioxytetracyclinne and the wafer is prepared from sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sorbitol and polyoxyethylated sorbitol. Other adhesives are hydroxyethylcellulose, a water-soluble polyethylene resin, gum tragacanth, gum arabic, gum Karaya, sodium silicate, hydrated aluminium silicate, isinglass, agar-agar, water-soluble alginate, gelatine, casein and albumen. The humectant and plasticizer may by glycerol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, polyoxyethylated sorbitol, polyoxyethylated glycol, polyoxyethylated glycerol, a -methylglycerol, corn syrup or propylene glycol glucoside.
