USPTO Abstract
A water-soluble d-glucose polymer-ferric hydroxide complex is precipitated from an aqueous solution of hydrolysed starch or dextrin having a ferricyanide value of 50-260 by the successive addition of an aqueous ferric salt solution, an aqueous alkali solution, and a liquid which is a non-solvent for the complex but which is at least partially miscible with water. Hydrolysis may be effected in 1-3N hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, hydrobromic, phosphoric, or trichloroacetic acid. The starch may be potato, corn, tapioca, wheat, rice, or cassava starch. The dextrin may be corn, potato, wheat, or tapioca dextrin, or a synthetic dextrin produced according to U.S.A. Specification 2,563,014. The ferric salt may be ferric chloride, nitrate, sulphate, or ammonium sulphate. The alkali may be sodium, potassium, or ammonium hydroxide and may be added to produce a pH of 9-14. The p non-solvent liquid may be methyl, ethyl, or isopropyl alcohol, or dihydrofurane, diethylether, or acetone. The precipitate may be separated by centrifugation or filtration and dried with moderate heating.ALSO:A therapeutic iron composition comprises a water-soluble d-glucose polymer-ferric hydroxide complex (see Group IV (a)). An aqueous solution may contain 5-100 mg. of iron/mm. and its pH may be adjusted to 7.0-7.5. It may be sterilized by means of steam or filtration through a filter. An aqueous solution may also contain Vitamin B12, cobalt chloride, zinc sulphate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, phenol, chlorobutanol, corn syrup, sorbitol, mannitol and the methyl and propyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. A solid composition may also contain dextrose, lactose, starch, and magnesium stearate.
