USPTO Abstract

A spermicidal composition in a pressure container comprises an emulsion concentrate and a volatile liquefied propellant, the said concentrate comprising a spermicidal agent, a stable foaming emulsion vehicle and a polymeric film forming agent. The composition comprises 85 to 95% of the emulsion concentrate and 5 to 15% of the propellant. The emulsion concentrate contains 70 to 10% of the spermicidal agent, less than 5% of the film-forming agent and, as stable foaming emulsion vehicle, 8 to 15% of an oil phase, 5 to 12% of a surfactant phase and water. The spermicidal agent may be an alkyl phenoxy polyoxy-ethylene ethanol of general formula RC6H4O(CH2CH2O)n-1CH2CH2 OH wherein R is an alkyl radical having 1 to 22 carbon atoms and n is an integer from 8 to 11 e.g. nonyl phenoxypolyethoxyethanol, alone or in admixture with di-isobutyl phenoxyethoxy ethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. The film-forming agent is polyvinyl pyrrolidone, methyl cellulose or carboxymethyl cellulose and it may be strengthened by the addition of glyceryl monostearate. The oil phase consists of saturated long chain fatty acids such as myristic acid, stearic acid, lauric acid or palmitic acid; triethanolamine or other alkaline substance to saponify part of the fatty acids to soaps and foam stabilizers such as glyceryl monostearate and polyethylene glycols of 200 to 1000 molecular weight. The surfactant may be a polyoxyalkylene ether of a partial fatty acid ester. The propellants are haloalkanes e.g. "Freons" (Registered Trade Mark).
