A therapeutic composition having a sedative, hypnotic and anaesthetic effect and having an action on the metabolism of nitrogen contains, in association with a pharmaceutically administrable vehicle, 4-hydroxy-butyric acid (as such or in the lactone form) or a therapeutically administrable salt thereof, said vehicle, when liquid, being a sterile injectable liquid or a liquid containing a flavouring agent. Specified salts are the alkali metal salts especially the sodium salt, and the alkaline earth metal salts such as the calcium salt. The compositions are for parenteral, oral or rectal use. They may be formulated into enemas suppositories and aqueous solutions for injection. The compositions may also contain barbiturates having anaesthetic sedative or hypnotic activity.
