Compositions for the treatment of the hair and scalp and having a pH of between 6.0 and 8.6 comprise a stable emulsion containing: an estrogenic hormone, e.g. oestrone, oestradiol, stilbesterol and dienestrol, a progestational hormone, e.g. progesterone or synthetic hormones having progestational activity, methionine or a simple compound or derivative thereof, e.g. acetyl methionine or allantoin acetyl methionate and an a -amino acid, e.g. glutathione, cystine, glycine, alkyl diamino ethyl glycine (hydrochloride) and tyrosine. Optional ingredients include "trace minerals," e.g. Cu, Zn, Mg and Mn, cepharantine and its salts, antibiotics, bactericides, e.g. 2 : 4-dichlorophenyl benzene sulphonate, benzalkonium chlorides, halogenated phenols and organic sulphates, fungicidal and pityosporum ovalicidal agents, antiseptics, e.g. hexachlorophene, thiouram and bithional, vasodilators, e.g. methyl-, ethyl-, butyl- or furfuryl-nicotinate, perfumes and dyes, conventional wetting, dispersing and emulsifying agents and ointment bases.
