USPTO Abstract
Pharmaceutical compositions for oral and topical use comprise, as active ingredient, 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol. The compositions may be compounded in various pharmaceutical forms, for example, mouth washes, toothpastes, pastilles, lozenges, boiled sweets, ointments, jellies, lotions, medicated powders and ear-drops with the additions of conventional pharmaceutical excipients, binders, lubricants, liquid diluents of low volatility, e.g. propylene glycol and antifoaming agents, e.g. a silicone. A colour stabilizing agent, e.g. citric acid, bacteriostatic and/or fungistatic substances, e.g. hexachlorophene, amyl-m-cresol, and other pharmaceutically active ingredients, e.g. salicylic acid, cetrimide, saligenin (o-hydroxy benzul alcohol) and cholesterol may also be present. Examples given of compositions containing 2,4-dichlorbenzyl alcohol (A) are: (1) lozenges comprising A, acacia gum, magnesium stearate and sucrose; (2) lozenges comprising A, saligenin, carbowax 6000, magnesium stearate, tragacanth, tartaric acid, and sucrose; (3) throat sweets comprising A, sugar, glucose, tartaric acid and amyl-m-cresol; (4) a water-miscible cream comprising A, and carbowax 1500; (5) an ear-drop solution of A in propylene glycol; (6) a scalp lotion comprising A, hexachlorophene, salicylic acid, cholesterol, cetrimide, iso-propyl myristate and an aqueous solution of quassia; (7) an antiseptic jelly comprising A, "Carbapol" (Registered Trade Mark) 934, triethanolamine, propylene glycol and water; (8) a veterinary ear-canker powder comprising A, hexachlorophene, g -benzene hexachloride, boric acid, zinc oxide, benzocaine, magnesium stearate, talc and kaolin; (9) a veterinary wound and strike powder comprising A, dieldrin, boric acid and pre-cooked starch; (10) a toothpaste comprising A, glycerine, water, tragacanth, heavy and light calcium carbonate, sodium lauryl sulphate and soluble saccharin.
