USPTO Abstract

A solid, insoluble organic medicinal agent of specific gravity less than about two is dispersed in an aqueous polyalkylene glycol vehicle to give a fluid stable aqueous suspension. The solid medicinal agent may be mixed with a solid polyalkylene glycol of molecular weight greater than about 4000 and then dispersed in an aqueous vehicle to give the stable suspension. Specified medicinal agents include antibiotics such as erythromycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline and their insoluble salts and esters; insoluble penicillin compounds such as N,N1-dibenzylethylene diamine di-penicillin, N,N1-di(a -methylbenzyl)-ethylenediamine di-penicillin, N,N1-difurfuryl-ethylenediamine di-penicillin, N,N1-bis-(3,5,5-trimethylhexyl) ethylenediamine di-penicillin, aluminium penicillin sulphonamides, procaine penicillins G, O and K, and 2-chlorprocaine penicillin; steroids such as progesterone, testosterone propionate, estradiol mono-benzoate, cortisone, hydrocortisone, and insoluble cortisone and hydrocortisone esters; halosteroids such as 9-a -chloro- and 9-a -fluorocortisones and 9-a -chloro- and 9-a -fluorohydrocortisones and esters thereof; sulphamerazine, sulphadiazine, sulphamethazine and other sulphonamides; barbiturates such as barbital, phenobarbital, 2 - monobromoisovaleryl - carbamide, bromodiethylacetylurea, salicylamide and acetophenetidin. Additional ingredients comprise non-ionic surface-active agents such as polyoxyalkylene ethers of partial higher fatty acid esters of polyhydroxy alcohols, arylalkyl-polyether alcohols, polyethylene glycol fatty acid esters, and dialkylsulphosuccinates; lubricants such as glycerol, sorbitol and propylene glycol; preservatives such as sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate, chlorbutanol, myristyl g -picolinium chloride, benzyl alcohol, sodium benzoate and methyl paraben; buffers, stabilizers, colouring, sweetening and flavouring agents. Other additives specified include carboxymethyl-hydroxymethyl cellulose, hydroxy-ethyl cellulose, dextran, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, gelatine, alginates, tragacanth, pectin, acacia, soluble starches, lecithin and cephalin. The suspensions may be used for parenteral, ophthalmic, oral and topical administration. Numerous examples are given.
