USPTO Abstract
A therapeutic colloidal preparation of iron is obtained by reacting a solution of partially de-polymerized dextran, a solution or suspension of a ferric compound and an alkali, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate, to form a colloidal solution whose pH is, or is adjusted to, between 4 and 11. For injection it is brought to pH 5,5-8,5. Ferric compounds used are salts, precipitated ferric hydroxide, &c. The preparation which may contain 6-10 per cent ferric hydrioxide, may be rendered isotonic by dialysis against running water, or by separating the colloid by adding methyl or ethyl alcohol, and redissolving in water with addition of a suitable amount of sodium chloride or glucose. The colloidal solutions may be dehydrated by evaporation under reduced pressure to yield a solid, which may be reconstituted with water.
