USPTO Abstract

A cannabidiol (CBD) preparation for use in the treatment of seizures associated with encephalocele. The seizures associated with encephalocele may be absence, focal seizures with secondary generalisation and focal seizures with impairment. The CBD preparation may comprise greater than 95% (w/w) CBD and no more than 0.15% (w/w) tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The CBD preparation may comprise greater than 98% (w/w) CBD and les than or equal to 25 (w/w) other cannabinoids comprising tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol-C1 (CBD-C1), cannabidivarin (CBDV) and cannabidiol-C4 (CBD-C4); wherein the THC is present as a mixture of trans-THC and cis-THC. The CBD preparation may be used in combination with one or more concomitant anti-epileptic drugs (AED), particularly levetiracetam, clobazam, rufinamide or topiramate. The CBD or a portion thereof may be isolated from cannabis plant material or prepared synthetically. The dose of CBD may be greater than 5mg/kg/day, 20mg/kg/day, 25mg/kg/day or 50mg/kg/day. A method of treating seizures associated with encephalocele comprising administering a cannabidiol (CBD) preparation is also disclosed.
