USPTO Abstract

A cannabidiol (CBD) preparation for use in the treatment of seizures associated with schizencephaly. The seizures associated with schizencephaly may be tonic, tonic-clonic, spasms, focal seizures with impairment and focal seizures with secondary generalisation. The CBD preparation may comprise greater than 95% (w/w) CBD and no more than 0.15% (w/w) tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The CBD preparation may comprise greater than 98% (w/w) CBD and less than or equal to 25 (w/w) other cannabinoids comprising tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol-C1 (CBD-C1), cannabidivarin (CBDV) and cannabidiol-C4 (CBD-C4); wherein the THC is present as a mixture of trans-THC and cis-THC. The CBD preparation may be used in combination with one or more concomitant anti-epileptic drugs (AED), particularly levetiracetam, lacosamide or topiramate. The CBD or a portion thereof may be isolated from cannabis plant material or prepared synthetically. The dose of CBD may be greater than 5mg/kg/day, 20mg/kg/day, 25mg/kg/day or 50mg/kg/day. A method of treating seizures associated with schizencephaly comprising administering a cannabidiol (CBD) preparation is also disclosed.
