USPTO Abstract

Apparatus for removing a sheath from a pre-filled syringe, which retracts the needle to protect it prior to and after injection. The apparatus has a housing 9 enclosing the syringe barrel 2, defining an injection end 10 with an aperture 11 allowing the sheath to protrude through, and a syringe barrel mount 15 retaining the syringe in the housing. The mount 15 is axially slidable within the housing. A spring biasing means 16, biases the mount backwards, away from the injection end 10 of the housing 9, but resilient beam 14 and bushing 18 initially latch the mount (see fig 4) to prevent movement. The latching 14, 18 is releasable by removing the sheath, which slides the mount 15 towards the injection end (see fig 5); once released, the needle retracts (see fig 2). An injection device comprising the apparatus is also provided. Also claimed is an apparatus having a housing, syringe retention means and sheath removal means comprising a button which moves wedges to urge the sheath from the needle (see figures 9, 10).
