USPTO Abstract

A dendritic polymer comprises at least two limbs radiating from a central core, each of said limbs comprising at least two branches, and is characterised in that the branches contain a linkage selected from carbonate, urethane, urea, amide and ester linkages and that each limb has a linkage selected from carbonate, urethane, urea, amide and ester linkages between the branches and the core, provided that at least one of the said linkages is selected from carbonate, urethane and urea linkages. Dendritic polymers may be produced by a process in which in successive reaction steps dendritic polymer growth is produced by (a) reacting groups selected from alcohol groups, thiol groups, primary amino groups and carboxylic acid groups with a reagent comprising a carbonyl or thiocarbonyl moiety bonded via C-N bonds to two heterocyclic rings Z each containing a further N atom, thereby forming a compound in which an active hydrogen atom of the alcohol, thiol and/or amino groups, and/or each carboxylic acid group, is replaced by groups of the formula and (b) reacting the resulting compound with a group selected from primary alcohol groups and primary amine groups. Intermediate compounds possessing novelty are obtained in the process.
