A compound of formula (I): <IMAGE> in which Ar is an optionally substituted aryl or heterocyclic ring system; W is O or NR<1> where R<1> is hydrogen or lower alkyl or alkenyl; Y is a 5 membered ring containing one nitrogen atom, the ring being substituted by a group CR<2>R<3>XR<4> and optionally by one or more additional groups; X is (CH2)n, CH=CH, CH(OR<6>)CH2, COCH2; where n is 0, 1 or 2; R<2> and R<3> are H, optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, halogen, NR<7>R<8> or R<2> and R<3> together with the carbon to which they are attached form an optionally substituted alkenyl or cycloalkyl group; R<4> is CO2R<9>, CN, COR<9>, CH2OR<9>, CH(OH)R<9>, CH(OR<9>)R<10>, CSNH2, COSR<9>, CSOR<9>, CONHSO2R<9>, CONR<11>R<12>, CONHNR<11>R<12>, CONHN<+>R<11>R<12>R<13>R<14->, CO2-R<15> or COON=CR<9>R<10>; R<6>, R<9> and R<10> are H or an optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, alkenyl or alkynyl group; R<7>, R<8>, R<11>, R<12> and R<13> are H or an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or alkynyl group or any two of R<7>, R<8>, R<11>, R<12> and R<13> together with the atom to which they are attached form a cycloalkyl or heterocyclic ring; R<14-> is an agriculturally acceptable anion; and R<15+> is an agriculturally acceptable cation.
