USPTO Abstract

17 beta esters of testosterone and 5 alpha -dihydrotestosterone which are derived from an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with 8 to 16 carbon atoms of the formula <IMAGE> in which n is 0 or 1, R1 is a C1-C5-alkyl group, R2 is a C3-C10-alkyl group or a C6-C10-cycloaliphatic group containing a 6-membered ring, with the proviso that R2 is not a C3-C6-alkyl group when R1 is a C1- or C2-alkyl group, or R1 and R2 are, together with the C atom to which they are bonded, a C7-C12-cycloaliphatic group which can be substituted by C1-C3-alkyl, are obtained by reacting testosterone or 5 alpha -dihydrotestosterone with a corresponding acid or its anhydride or acid halide. The esters have androgenic activity, in particular on oral administration in the presence of a pharmaceutically compatible lipid.
