USPTO Abstract

1486994 Intra-uterine contraceptive device and inserter MULTILAN SA 14 Feb 1975 [14 Feb 1974] 6324/75 Heading A5R An I.U.D. comprises two cantilevered resilient arms 2 extending oppositely from one end of a stem 1, the device when inserted having the stem located in a tube 3 so that at the cervix the arms collapse against the outer surface of the tube and regain their relaxed position within the uterus. The arms are curved towards the stem to form part of an ellipse, the longer axis of which coincides with the stem. The stem may carry a spiral of copper wire 5 or a hormone preparation to aid in preventing pregnancy. Protruberances 4 on the arms retain the device in position within the uterus and a wire 6 aids withdrawal.
