1479597 Stabilised catecholamine solutions SMITH & NEPHEW PHARMACEUTICALS Ltd 24 Sept 1974 [24 Sept 1973 (2)] 44660/73 and 44661/73 Heading A5B A topical aqueous solution especially suitable for application to the eye for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma comprises 0.1 to 5% by weight of a therapeutically active catecholamine in purified form, from 0.5 to 5% by weight of a water-soluble pharmacologically tolerated thiolic stabilising agent, at least one acid or acid-reacting compound unless the thiolic compound is suitably acidic, whereby the catecholamine is solubilised, and a base to bring the pH to 6.0 to 7.5, the solution being free from borate ions. The catecholamine may be adrenaline, isoprenaline or noradrenaline. The thiolic compound may be cysteine, N- acetyl cysteine, α-mercaptol acetic acid, α- mercaptolpropionic acid, methyl cysteinate, 1- thiosorbitol, or 1-thioglycerol. The base may be ammonium hydroxide; the acid or acidic compound may be citric acid, a phosphate or phosphoric acid. The solutions may also contain an adrenergic blocking agent such as guanethidine or a salt thereof.
