1450507 Tretinoin cream JOHNSON & JOHNSON 8 Oct 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 43618/74 Heading A5B A stabilized tretinion cream emulsion for topical application comprises from 0.005 to 0.5% by wt. of tretinion, from 0.1 to 1.0% by wt. of xanthan gum, from 1.0 to 10.0% by wt. of an emulsifier, from 15.0 to 50.0% by wt. of a pharmaceutically acceptable hydrophobic material, from 0.05 to 1.0% by wt. of a preservative, from 0.01 to 1.0%, by wt. of an antioxidant and water. The emulsifier is preferably a non-ionic emulsifier such as a poly-oxalkylene fatty acid ester or a polyoxyalkylene fatty acid ether. The hydrophobic material may be a fatty acid, fatty alcohol or fatty acid ester wherein the fatty acid group has from 12 to 20 carbon atoms, or petrolatum, beeswax, sperm wax. lanolin or mineral oil. The preservative may be benzyl alcohol, methyl- or ethyl paraben or sorbic acid, and the antioxidant may be butylated hydroxytoluene or dl-alpha tocopherol. The emulsion may also contain a hemuectant, a sequestering agent, a dye, a perfume oil, a sunscreen and/or an antiinflammatory corticosteroid.
