1441665 Pyridinium salts COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION 10 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 42514/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of general Formula I wherein Y is hydrogen or halogen; R is straight- or branched-chain, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or allyl; substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl; or aralkyl; R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen halogen; sulphonate; azido; a radical of the formula -NH-SO 2 -R 1 , wherein R 1 represents a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a straight- or branched-chain, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group; a radical of the formula (lower alkyl) 2 ; a radical of the formula wherein R 2 represents -COOH, -COO (lower alkyl) or -NH-CO-NH 2 ; or a radical of the formula -NH-R<SP>11</SP>, -S-R<SP>11</SP> or -O-R<SP>11</SP>, wherein R<SP>11</SP> represents hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted, straight- or branched-chain alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl or aralkyl, or cyano; and A<SP>-</SP>, which is not present when R<SP>1</SP> contains an anionic group, represents a halide anion. They may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula with a phosphorus halide or oxyhalide to produce a compound of formula where Hal is halogen and optionally halogenating in the 3-position and/or replacing the 6-halo substitutent by other radicals represented by R<SP>1</SP>. The compounds of Formula I are used in fungicidal compositions.
