USPTO Abstract
1397285 Aerosol foam-forming compositions PHARMACIA AB 24 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54300/72 Heading C4X An aerosol foam-forming composition comprises a hydrocarbon and/or a lipophilic hydrocarbon derivative, water, a liquefied propellant and one or more surfactants, in such proportions as to obtain a mesomorphic phase which constitutes at least 5% by wt. of the composition, the surfactant(s) being water-soluble and soluble in the hydrocarbon and/or hydrocarbon derivative, and the propellant being selected from fluoro and/or chloro-substituted lower saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons or mixtures thereof, or C 1 -C 6 unsubstituted hydrocarbons, and being dissolved in the mesomorphic phase in an amount of at least 2% by wt. of the composition. A "mesomorphic phase" is a phase having "anisotropic" liquid crystal shape intermediate in properties between the true liquid and the crystal states. The hydrocarbon or lipophilic derivative thereof may be p-xylene, 1-decanol, oleic acid, cholesterol, butanol or caprylic acid. Specified surfactants are 1- aminooctane, sodium oleate, decaethylene glycol, sodium caprylate and lecithin, and specified propellants are dichlorodifluoromethane, dichlorotetrafluoroethane, octafluorocyclobutane, propane, i-butane, pentane, i-pentane, and hexane. The compositions form stable and longlasting foams having application in pharmaceutical, foamed plastics, or fire-fighting fields or to remove oil discharged on water, but no examples of these applications are given.
