1339764 Quaternary salts containing two pyridine rings IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 March 1972 [29 March 1971] 8071/71 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> are each (i) (C 6-14 ) alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyalkoxyalkyl, alkanoyloxyalkyl or aryloxyalkyl, (ii) Ph or naphthyl containing 0-3 halogen atoms, (iii) C 1-3 alkyl substituted by Ph or naphthyl, of which either is substituted by 0-3 halogen atoms, or C 1-6 alkyl or alkoxy groups; A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP> are each a direct link or CH 2 CONH; (X<SP>1</SP>X<SP>1</SP>)<SP>2(-)</SP> is two monoanions or a dianion; and A<SP>3</SP> is one of 29 linking groups listed in the Specification, but excluding such compounds where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> are each benzyl, A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP> are each a direct link, and A<SP>3</SP> is -CH : CH-. These compounds are prepared by quaternization, optionally following by exchange of anion. Certain of the parent bispyridyl compounds are also prepared. Therapeutic compositions for oral or topical administration, or for use as a mouthwash, paste, gel or fluid suspension for the purpose of preventing dental plaque formation, comprise compounds of the above formula, which have antibacterial activity. General environmental antiseptics or disinfectants may be in the form of a non-sterilized aqueous or oily solution or suspension, or an aerosol.
