A composition suitable for topical application to a patient's scalp and hair comprises 0.02 to 1% by weight of estriol in a pharmaceutically and cosmetically acceptable solvent mixture, the mixture comprising water and an organic solvent having a boiling point not greater than 100‹C., and any organic solvent present having a boiling point greater than 100‹C being in a minor proportion by weight of the total organic solvent.
