[Also in Division C3] A composition for administration by injection in the treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia is prepared by a method comprising the steps of: (a) polymerising a monosaccharide or an oligosaccharide with or without acid catalysis to form a mixture of polymers of different molecular weights; (b) heating with aqueous alkali and separating the mixture into two or more fractions according to molecular weight, and (c) selecting from these fractions or fraction containing polysaccharides of the desired range of molecular weights, this being determined by the Reducing Value range of 5% to 10% (as defined) and allowing this fraction to react with a water-soluble inorganic iron compound to produce a mixture of substantially non-toxic complexes, the aqueous solution of which has a viscosity not too high to preclude administration by injection. Suitable starting materials are dextrose, galactose, arabinose, rhamnose, mannose, sorbose, xylose, lactose, sucrose and raffinose.
