A pharmaceutical tablet base is made by spray-drying a suspension of (a) finely divided silica or alumina, (b) a finely divided inert excipient and, (c) an aqueous solution of a water-soluble binder in proportions such that the spray-dried preparation contains the constituents in the proportions by weight of 1-20% of (a), 60-98% of (b) and 1-20% binder. The viscosity of the suspension may be adjusted prior to spray-drying by introducing a gas into and/or foaming the suspension. In making tablets, the base is preferably mixed with an additional material which is the product of spray-drying a suspension of finely divided silica or alumina in a solution of a swellable binder. Suitable binders (for both spray-dried materials) are soluble starch (APS starch) and hydrophilic cellulose derivatives.
