124,009. Kimber, W. E. Jan. 12, 1918. Casting processes; moulds. - Tools for turning, planing, boring, &c. have a mild steel or carbon tool steel main portion 1 to which a piece of high-speed steel 3 is fused or welded. The stem 1 is introduced into a pocket 4 of refractory material such as Sheffield clay, and a clear space 5 is left opposite the reduced end 2 of the stem which enters a recess 6. The wall adjacent the clearance is made thinner than the other walls. A wedge 8 of refractory material fixes the upper end of the stem. The pocket is then heated to a bright red and plunged into a pot of molten high-speed steel to the level 9 to submerge a hole 7 to allow the highspeed steel to pass to the interior. An opening 10 may be provided at the bottom, which is closed before the removal of the pocket. The pocket and stem are cooled in sand. The highspeed steel may be melted in the pocket 4 and the stem, after heating, plunged into the molten metal.
