[Also in Division A5] Novel benzodipyrones of the formula and pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives thereof, wherein an adjacent pair of P, Q, R and T forms the chain -COCR1=C(COOH)-O- which may be bonded to the benzene ring in either sense, the other two of P, Q, R and T are the same or different and are H or a substituent other than H and each R 1 is the same or different and is H or optionally substituted C 1-10 alkyl, C 1-10 alkoxy or aryl, may be prepared by reacting in one or more stages a compound of the formula wherein A 1 and A 2 together form the chain or chains convertible thereto, or are groups convertible to these chains or are derivatives or precursors of these chains or groups, an adjacent pair of the substituents B 1 , B 2 , B 3 and B 4 is the groups A 1 and A 2 the two pairs of groups A 1 and A 2 having the same or different values except that both pairs of groups may not be -COCR 1 = (COOH)-O- and the other two of the substituents B 1 , B 2 , B 3 and B 4 are H or substituents other than H, to convert the A 1 and A 2 groups into the desired chains or pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives thereof.
