Heading C2C. 1-Glycosyl-5-azacytosines of the general formula wherein R1 is a glycosyl residue, R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-4 alkyl group and R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP>, which are the same or different, are each a hydrogen atom, a C 1-4 alkyl group or a C 7-10 aralkyl group, are prepared by reaction of a 1- peracylglycosyl - 1,2 - dihydro - 1,3,5 - triazin- 2-one of the general formula wherein R<SP>5</SP> is a peracylglycosyl residue, the acyl group containing from 2 to 10 carbon atoms, and X is a C 1-4 alkoxy or alkylthio group, with an alkali metal C 1-6 alkoxide and treatment of the resulting 1 -glycosyl- 1 ,2-dihydro - 4 - alkoxy - 1,3,5 - triazin - 2 - one of the general formula wherein R<SP>6</SP> is a C 1-6 alkyl group, with ammonia or an amine of the general formula R<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>NH. The two steps may be carried out simultaneously using the ammonia or amine in the form of an alkanol solution thereof, or the first step may be omitted.
