1,226,394. Iron - glycerin - hydroxycarboxylic acid complexes. PHARMAZEUTISCHE FABRIK MONTAVIT G.m.b.H. 3 July, 1968 [4 July, 1967], No. 31693/68. Heading C2C. Iron (III) - glycerin - hydroxycarboxylic acid complexes are prepared by mixing in an aqueous medium an iron (III) compound, glycerin and a hydroxycarboxylic acid, and adjusting the pH of the reaction mixture to a value of at least 5. Preferably the pH of the reaction mixture is 5-8 and the mol. ratios of the iron (III) compound: glycerin: hydroxycarboxylic acid are 1: ¢- 10:1/3-3. The iron (III) compound may be ferric chloride, ferric sulphate or an iron (III) hydroxycarboxylic acid salt such as ferric citrate. The hydroxycarboxylic acid reactant may be tartaric acid, citric acid, malic acid or gluconic acid, either in its free form or in the form of a ferric salt. The complexes may be modified by mixing the reactants and adjusting the pH to 5-6 and then adding natural or depolymerized inulin to the reaction mixture and readjusting the pH to a value of 7 to 8 to give an inulin modified complex. Pharmaceutical compositions contain the above novel iron (III) complexes in aqueous solution with an iron content of 5-100 mg./ml. of solution. The solution may contain a resorption retarding agent such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The solutions may be produced in ampoules for parenteral administration.
