1,214,093. Deoxycholic acid. RIGHTER GEDEON VEGYESZETI GYAR RT. 25 Nov., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 55846/68. Heading C2U. Pure deoxycholic acid is prepared from a fatty acid adduct thereof by treating a solution of the adduct in an organic solvent with urea, separating the precipitated fatty acid-urea complex and recovering deoxycholic acid from the solution. The initial adduct may be obtained by working up raw bile. The organic solvent may be methanol. The urea may be added in solid form, and charcoal may also be added. The treatment is preferably effected at reflux and the precipitate removed by filtration or centrifuging after cooling to about 5‹ C. Deoxycholic acid is isolated from the solution by evaporating, dissolving the residue in aqueous NaOH and precipitating the product with H 2 SO 4 . Sodium deoxycholate is obtained by evaporating the NaOH solution or by dissolving the final product in aqueous NaOH and evaporating, e.g. by spray-drying.
