Aminoalkyl fumarates of the general formula where B is a C 2-12 tertiary aliphatic amino group or a residue of piperidine or its homologue, A is H, CH 3 or -CH 2 B and n is 1 or 2, are obtained by reacting maleic anhydride with an alkanolamine of general formula at an elevated temperature in the presence of an esterification catalyst and in an inert organic solvent medium, and the water formed is continuously distilled off azeotropically. The esterification catalyst is preferably ferric sulphate, aluminium sulphate, mixtures thereof or mixtures of the sulphates with alkalis. The solvent may be benzene or its homologues, e.g. xylene and nitrogen is preferably bubbled through the reaction mixture. In the examples, the novel compounds bis-(2-diethylaminoisopropyl) - fumarate, bis - (2 - diallylaminoisopropyl) - fumarate, di - (2 - (N - piperidyl)- ethyl) - fumarate, bis - (1,3 - (dimethylamino)- isopropyl) - fumarate and bis - (1,3 - bis - (diethylamino)-isopropyl)-fumarate are prepared.
